Over 2.6 million people are currently tuned in to see Felix Baumgartner ascend to 121,000+ feet [23 miles] in a balloon and then freefall back to Earth. Baumgatner will break the speed of sound on his jump back to earth and he will break four world records – highest balloon ascent, highest parachute jump, longest drogue-fall, and fastest speed by a human being through the atmosphere. Baumgartner’s launch was scheduled for 6:00 am PST this morning but was delayed until 8:30 am PST. Learn more about the mission here.

[Update – Felix’s freefall was successful, after ascending for 2 hours and 21 minutes to 128,097 feet [39,044 meters], he jumped, freefalling for 4 minutes, 19 seconds he reached speeds of 833 mph or Mach 1.24 [1,340 km/h] breaking the sound barrier. Mission Highlights.

Red Bull Stratos 2012 – Mission To The Edge Of Space.

In early October 2012, Red Bull Stratos will test human limits as they send Felix Baumgartner 120,000+ feet high in a stratospheric balloon. Upon reaching 23 miles [120,000+ feet] Felix will then make a freefall jump and reach supersonic speeds as he descends back to earth. Almost 52 years ago to the day, Joe Kittinger jumped 102,800 feet reaching 614 mph [988 km/h] and set four world records with one jump – highest balloon ascent, highest parachute jump, longest drogue-fall, and fastest speed by a human being through the atmosphere. Watch Baumgarnter’s jump live here. Launch time is set for 5:00 am PST October 9th, 2012.
